As a result, companies must seek to control and limit exposure to recognized risk factors by acting on the determinants of these said factors.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c300c74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c300c74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Identifying and controlling the determinants of risk factors can be a worrying activity for employers with limited resources (human, financial, etc.). In this context, many employers are strongly tempted to focus their prevention efforts on an individual approach aimed at improving the worker&#8217;s capacity by encouraging the practice of physical activity in the workplace.<\/p><p>Warm-ups, stretching and muscle strengthening exercises are therefore of interest to many employers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8852b60 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8852b60\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;gradient&quot;}\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5c8f1e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"b5c8f1e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-564e5ad elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"564e5ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Several questions arise:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-82c47cc e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"82c47cc\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8e2fa3 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c8e2fa3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How effective are these practices?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>What is the scientific validity of these practices?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>For which type of workstation should workplace exercises be considered?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Etc.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1a1024 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e1a1024\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Recently, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inrs.fr\/\">French National Research and Safety Institute (INRS)<\/a> published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inrs.fr\/media.html?refINRS=TC%20161\">an article reviewing the most recent scientific literature on this subject.<\/a><\/p><p>From the outset, a distinction must be made between stretching exercises and warm-up exercises.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a98f09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6a98f09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWarm-up\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65856bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"65856bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1.2rem;\">Exercise that aims to raise the body temperature and the temperature of the muscles that will be used during the activity.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-969b0cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"969b0cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStretching\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b8a559 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b8a559\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1.2rem;\">Exercise that aims to improve joint mobility by gradually lengthening the muscle to its maximum range.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b49c51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b49c51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Effectiveness of stretching exercises<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27e29bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"27e29bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1.2rem;\">In the vast majority of stretching programs observed in the workplace, static stretching exercises are offered to employees. This method consists of gradually stretching the muscle without shaking, then holding the muscle stretched for several seconds. <\/span><\/p><p>In short, although static stretching has long been perceived as an essential practice for optimizing physical performance, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-csmr\/fulltext\/2014\/05000\/The_Effects_of_Stretching_on_Performance.12.aspx\">Peck et al. (2013)<\/a> concluded that, following a review of the scientific literature, static stretching decreased physical performance by:<\/p><ul><li>reducing the ability and skill to generate force;<\/li><li>decreasing contraction speed and agility;<\/li><li>having no impact on physical endurance.<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><p>Based on these facts, at Ergokinox Inc., we believe that <strong>the practice of static stretching exercises before work activities should be avoided.<\/strong><\/p><p>This opinion is consistent with the conclusions of several authors who conclude that the impact of stretching exercises on the prevention of MSDs has not been conclusively demonstrated:<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/260753282_Do_Stretching_Programs_Prevent_Work-related_Musculoskeletal_Disorders\">Choi, S.D. &amp; Woletz, T. (2010). Do Stretching Programs Prevent Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders? Journal of Safety, Health &amp; Environmental Research, 6(3). <\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaljournals.se\/jrm\/content\/abstract\/10.2340\/16501977-0204\"><span class=\"highlight\">da Costa BR, Vieira ER. (2008) Stretching<\/span> to <span class=\"highlight\">reduce<\/span> <span class=\"highlight\">work<\/span>\u2013<span class=\"highlight\">related<\/span> musculoskeletal disorders: a systematic review. <span role=\"menubar\">J Rehabil Med.<\/span> May;40(5):321-8. <\/a><\/li><li class=\"auths\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10473220301367\"><span class=\"authors\">Jennifer A. (2004). Interventions to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, 14(1) 135-152.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5bb4aca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5bb4aca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Effectiveness of warm-up exercises<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b6288f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b6288f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On the other hand, very few scientific studies have been conducted on daily warm-ups in the workplace.<\/p><p>In 2003, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/index.htm\">Health and Safety Executive<\/a> concluded in its document <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/research\/rrhtm\/rr097.htm\">The principles of good manual handling: Achieving a consensus<\/a> that there was no scientific evidence of the beneficial effects of warm-up exercises in reducing MSDs during work activities involving the handling of loads.<\/p><p>Even if their effectiveness in preventing MSDs has not been proven, the results of some studies illustrate, more broadly, their beneficial effects on physical and mental preparation, the strengthening of team spirit and the opportunity offered to disseminate specific messages on occupational health and safety.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4988b6 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"e4988b6\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-885c840 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"885c840\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a722f19 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a722f19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Furthermore, it is interesting to note that in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0022437515000699?via%3Dihub\">study published in 2015, Goldenhar et al.<\/a> demonstrated that 28% of workers involved in a pre-activity warm-up program considered them useful for identifying painful areas and thus perhaps for avoiding more serious injury.<\/p><p>In short, it is important to note that these studies have not objectively demonstrated the effectiveness of warm-up exercises in preventing MSDs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1dca226 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1dca226\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-86a6a27 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"86a6a27\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" elementor-element-aea84a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aea84a2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8b5481 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c8b5481\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Consequently, given the lack of conclusive results, at Ergokinox, we believe that the practice of preventive exercises in the workplace should be considered <strong>only as a complement<\/strong> to conventional preventive measures aimed at reducing the level of ergonomic risk in the work environment.<\/p><p>We can conclude that workplace exercise programs add measurable costs for results that have not yet been proven.
